Summer Engineering Exploration Experience (E3) for Students
The Engineering Exploration Experience (E3) is a one-week summer program for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students being offered at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. Students will have the opportunity to explore various engineering principles, focusing each day on a specific field: Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, Chemical, and Computer Engineering. The aim is to enable students to understand the differences between the various fields of engineering and to help them clarify which engineering field they may want to pursue.

High School Engineering
Forrest Career and Technology Center, Engineering Program
This 2-year program prepares students for entry into a two or four-year college engineering program. Students will learn the fundamental principles and applications of a wide variety of engineering fields.
Real World Design Challenge
The Real World Design Challenge (RWDC) is an annual competition that provides high school students, grades 9-12, the opportunity to work on real world engineering challenges in a team environment. Each year, student teams will be asked to address a challenge that confronts our nation’s leading industries. Students will utilize professional engineering software to develop their solutions and will also generate presentations that convincingly demonstrate the value of their solutions. The RWDC provides students with opportunities to apply the lessons of the classroom to the technical problems that are being faced in the workplace.
Engineer Like a Girl Program
Offered by the College of Southern Maryland, this week-long program is designed to increase awareness and familiarize high school girls with career opportunities in the field of engineering. The goal of the program is to stomp out negative stereotypes commonly associated with women’s ability to pursue careers in math and science related fields.
College Engineering
The Southern Maryland Engineering Program provides students with an opportunity to earn a degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland while attending classes in the local area. Through the collaborative efforts of College of Southern Maryland (CSM), University of Maryland Clark School of Engineering, and Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD), students are able to take advantage of accredited EE and ME courses close to home.
Students spend the first two years completing general coursework at CSM (or other institution). The remaining two years of the program, students take courses at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center (SMHEC) and at UMD College Park. These courses are taught by faculty on site in Southern Maryland or through distance education technologies. Engineering courses at SMHEC are taught by experienced part-time faculty members with a strong connection to the Patuxent River Naval Air Station.
Through an Educational Partnership Agreement between NAWCAD and UMD, upper-class students are provided with an opportunity to apply for the Pathways to Engineering Intern Program. Through this program, students gain work experience through internships at NAWCAD, as well as the potential of tuition assistance and post-graduate employment opportunities on the Naval base.
